Wide Open Spaces: Why Cowra is the Ultimate Soul-Cleanse
There is a special kind of magic that happens when the horizon stretches out to meet a clear blue sky.
In Cowra, the air feels lighter, the pace slows down, and the landscape invites you to match its vastness with a clear mind. If you are looking for a place that is truly good for the soul, this pocket of Country Australia in the Central West of New South Wales is the ultimate sanctuary.
When you need room to breathe, here are four essential experiences to ground you on your next visit:

Find stillness at Wyangala Dam
Swap the sound of traffic for the gentle lap of water against the shore on the banks of Wyangala Dam. Whether you’re out on the boat or staring out over the Dam with a morning coffee, Wyangala Waters is the ultimate destination for a digital detox. It’s where the sky meets the water, and the stress of the week finally melts away. Whether you’re staying in a cabin or just visiting for a picnic, it’s the ultimate spot to leave your notifications behind and let the enormity of the landscape take over.

Golden Horizons with Cowra Canola Experiences
There is nothing quite like the sight of our region draped in vibrant, endless yellow. Seeing the canola fields isn’t just a photo op; it’s an immersion in the beauty found right here in the heart of the Lachlan Valley. The transformation begins in late August and usually peaks throughout September, lasting into October. During this window, the rolling hills of the Central West explode into a vibrant array of green and gold. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in our iconic Fields of Gold, there are plenty of ways to experience the canola beyond our self-drive trail. Stay up to date with the seasonal offerings on the Visit Cowra website.
A friendly reminder that all canola fields are on private property. Please do not enter the paddocks and stay behind the fence line to keep our farmers’ crops safe while you snap that perfect shot.

The Magic of our Country Roads
Sometimes, the best therapy is a long drive with no destination in mind. Our winding country roads offer the best panoramic views of rolling hills anywhere in NSW, so roll the windows down, turn the music up, and let the rhythm of the road clear your head. There is no real “traffic” around here; just the rhythm of the road, occasionally dotted with a harvester or livestock truck. Take the long way home, roll the windows down, and let the views of rolling hills wash over you. It’s amazing how quickly a winding country road can clear a cluttered mind.

Tranquillity at the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre
As the largest Japanese Garden in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the pinnacle of peace. Meander through five hectares of manicured beauty, listen to the rush of the waterfalls, and feed the koi. It’s a world-class space designed specifically for quiet contemplation and relaxation. The best part is, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg nor an uncomfortable, cramped flight overseas!
So, why not leave the alarm clock behind and come see us? We’ve got a spot saved for you in the sunshine.
Getting here and around
Cowra is easy to reach, conveniently located at the intersection of three major highways:
- From Sydney: Take the Great Western Highway via Lithgow and Bathurst or through the Darling Causeway and via Bell.
- From Canberra: Travel via the Barton Highway, Yass and the Lachlan Valley Way.
With nearby towns such as Bathurst, Orange, Grenfell and Young just an hour to one-and-a-half hours away, Cowra makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding region.
