Cowra Canola Mural

Cowra Canola Mural

If you’ve ever driven through Cowra during early spring, you know the breathtaking sight of our Fields of Gold. Now, thanks to local artist Glenn Morton, you can experience that vibrant yellow glow all year round!

Located at the corner of Kendal and Lachlan Streets, this mural puts Cowra’s renowned yellow and green canola fields front and centre. Installed in 2020, this mural signals a new chapter for a beloved local landmark. For 25 years, a previous mural by Morton graced this same wall at the former Australiana Corner. After decades of exposure and water damage, it was time for a fresh coat.

Commissioned by building owner Allan Vorias with support from the Cowra Council, the new work depicts a good season in Cowra’s lush Lachlan Valley.

Morton didn’t just paint one farm; he combined scenes from three or four local properties he has painted over the years to create a compilation that is “typical of Cowra“.

Canola is the lifeblood of our regional landscape. Every August and September, the rolling hills transform into a sea of fluorescent yellow, drawing visitors from across the country. The mural serves as a permanent tribute to this spectacular seasonal cycle.

“What we are trying to depict here is just a good season, early spring with canola, varied crops and I happened to capture this scene in a smaller painting, I saw a storm,” he told the Cowra Guardian. “This is a compilation of a number of scenes that I’ve painted on properties on commissions I’ve had… I’ve probably used three or four scenes from properties around here together to make a mural that’s typical of Cowra.” – Glenn Morton, Artist
